FRAUD ALERTS !
These days fraud is making
the news more and more often. Thieves are perpetrating new scam ideas daily
and technology is oftentimes a supporting factor. Internet transactions and
pre-approved credit solicitations may be the means of personal identity
information getting into the wrong hands.
The Electronic Clearing
House Inc (ECHO) reports on one such scam that is seeking to have people
reveal their account numbers, only this deception claims that the individual
has already been a victim of fraud. The caller claims to be an employee
of the fraud department of a major credit card, that amounts have been charged
to the cardholder and they are entitled to a substantial refund. The thief
asks for verification of the card number or expiration date, whatever piece of
information that he is lacking.
It is recommended to never
give out personal information to a caller. Instead, reverse the situation; ask
for their name and call the company in question yourself. Monitor your
credit card statements closely and take immediate action when you do find a
charge not initiated by you or any authorized users on your account. To keep
your credit card information from thieves when making Internet purchases,
check for the padlock icon at the
bottom of the browser to be sure your transaction is secure.
